The structural design of how knowledge is organized, categorized, and navigated.
Information Architecture (IA) is the mental model of your system. It is the practice of structuring content so that users can predict where things are, understand what exists, and navigate without feeling lost.
Why It Matters
A beautiful user interface cannot save a broken Information Architecture. If a user searches for “authentication” and is dumped into a 5,000-word API reference page without any context of whether they are reading a tutorial, a concept guide, or a reference doc, the IA has failed.
IA vs. UI Design
- UI Design determines that the sidebar navigation should have a gray background and 16px text.
- Information Architecture determines that the sidebar should group content by Task (e.g., “Deploying”, “Testing”) rather than by Internal Team Name.
